Gabriele Tadino and the Fortifications of the Medieval City of Rhodes [EN]

Gabriele Tadino was a famous Venetian Army soldier, known for his success with military fortifications and strategy, who was stationed in Crete in early 1522. The Knights of St. John the Hospitallers of Rhodes were preparing for another siege from the Ottoman Empire, and called upon Tadino to help them design additional defenses in preparation for the siege. Although the island did eventually fall to the Turks at the end of 1522, Tadino’s contributions helped the island hold off 100,000 Turkish troops for more than six months.

My presentation gives illustrations and descriptions of the different kinds of defenses that Tadino (and other military engineers) designed for the Rhodes Medieval City before and during the siege of 1522. It has been said that the military architecture of the city at that time was the most advanced and formidable military architecture in the western hemisphere.
